NIEA Water Management Unit (WMU) hosted its first ever Webinar for Stakeholders on the Water Framework Directive on Tuesday 15th December 2020.
The purpose of the event was to update and engage the public with ongoing work around our aquatic environment, driven by the Water Framework Directive. The webinar attracted 133 participants. Attendees represented a wide range of interests including environmental NGOs, conservation groups, anglers, local councils, rivers trusts, farmers and academic researchers.
Topics discussed included NIEA water quality investigations and water pollution responses; the role of Marine Fisheries Division in monitoring bathing water quality and coastal change; and the WMU 3rd cycle draft River Basin Management Plans.
To enable stakeholder involvement, the evening was interspersed with live poll questions, each with a selection of possible answers. Poll topics varied widely from perceived environmental changes since the pandemic, to key local pressures in waterways. Participants also typed opinions and queries that were sent directly to the Chairs. In total 69 questions were asked and as well as answering a variety on the night, a written response to each is provided below.
