DAERA extends appointment of the Chairman of the Livestock and Meat Commission

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced a six month extension to the term of appointment of the Chairman of the Livestock Meat Commission (LMC).

Mr Gerard McGivern was first appointed as Chairman on 07 November 2015. The extension has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice, and will last until 6 May 2019.

The LMC was established in 1967 and has the general duty of assisting the development of the livestock (cattle and sheep) and livestock products sectors of the local agri-food industry. It provides a range of services to producers and meat traders including market intelligence and undertakes promotional activities. It also administers the Farm Quality Assurance Scheme and market support arrangements for beef and lamb in Northern Ireland.

  1. Gerard McGivern is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of the Institute of Economic Development. He has been involved at a senior level in a number of district councils in various marketing roles including leading the formulation and delivery of Mourne Mountains and Ring of Gullion Tourism Marketing Brand. He was also the founding manager of Banbridge District Enterprises Ltd and has been involved in Cross-Border initiatives.
  2. The above appointment was made in 2015 on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published. Mr McGivern has not been involved in any political activity during the past five years. 
  3. Appointments are made under section 1 of the Livestock Marketing Commission Act (NI) 1967.
  4. The post attracts a remuneration of £17,345  per annum.
  5. The department may take photographs and videos at announcements and events to publicise its work. Photographs, interviews, videos or other recordings may be issued to media organisations for publicity purposes or used in promotional material, including in publications, newspapers, magazines, other print media, on television, radio and electronic media (including social media and the internet). Photographs and videos will also be stored on the department’s internal records management system. The department will keep the photographs and recordings for no longer than is necessary for the purposes for which they have been obtained.
