This area is special scientific interest on account of the richness of its grassland vegetation. In contrast to the majority of the hay meadows in the region, the site is relatively dry and dominated by grasses with red fescue, yorkshire fog perennial ryegrass and crested dog's tail dominating. Yellow oat grass is also frequent.
There is an abundance of flowering plants such as bulbous buttercups, yellow rattle, red clover, black knapweed and ladies bed straw. Several rare plant species occur, including adders tongue fern and cowslip.
