Sustainability award for CAFRE Food Innovation Centre

The Food Innovation Centre at CAFRE, Loughry Campus has successfully achieved Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Model (BREEAM) Excellence under the BREEAM New Construction 2011: Education category.

BREEAM is the world's leading sustainability assessment method for buildings and aims to inspire developers to innovate and make effective use of resources. The two stage assessment process is carried out by independent assessors who evaluate the procurement, design, construction and operation of the building and certify on a scale of pass, good, very good, excellent and outstanding.

The CAFRE Food Innovation Centre has incorporated in its design, solar photo voltaics, biomass heating, rainwater collection and use of electric vehicles. It is one of the first Northern Ireland buildings to receive excellent at both the design and the post construction assessments using the 2011 education standard.

This project exemplifies CAFRE’s commitment to being at the forefront of innovation and sustainability.
