Due to the current suspension of stocking to comply with the Wildlife Order 1985, fish stocks on Movanagher fish farm have reached a critical point.

The health and welfare of a large number of fish are significantly affected, leading to increased potential for fish mortalities due to overcrowding, cannibalism, disease outbreaks, and rising water temperatures.

For welfare reasons, the Department conducted a cull of 44,351 fish at the farm. This was the minimum number necessary, to provide additional space for the remaining fish on the farm. The cull was authorised and overseen by a veterinarian surgeon during the week commencing 10th June 2024.

The Department continues to monitor fish welfare as changing environmental conditions impact the condition and health of the fish.

DAERA is actively working with Agri Foods and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) to develop a stocking protocol, compliant with the Wildlife Order, which may allow for stocking in the future.
