IEGS Releases First Quarterly Report
The Interim Environmental Governance Secretariat (IEGS) has released the first quarterly report on the receipt and validation of complaints referred to it for the period 1 January to 31 March 2021
The report is available on the IEGS website
The IEGS was established as a precursor to the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) which will have an environmental oversight role in England and also in Northern Ireland - subject to NI Executive and Assembly approval. The OEP’s role replaces that of the European Commission which ended following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU.
The IEGS’s key role in Northern Ireland is the management of complaints about alleged non-compliance with environmental law by public bodies. The IEGS will function until an Interim OEP is established on 1 July 2021.
IEGS was established by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) with staff from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) assisting in its work. IEGS will manage complaints for England and Northern Ireland for the interim period.
Complaints can be submitted to www.iegs.org.uk.
